To optimize your business for ChatGPT discovery, make sure OpenAI’s search crawler can reach your website, make your business information clear and consistent everywhere it appears, and build a reputation that shows up in reviews and independent mentions. ChatGPT search answers many questions by running live web searches and citing sources, so the businesses it recommends are usually the ones that are easy to find, easy to understand and well regarded across the web. This guide explains how ChatGPT finds information, what you can control and what you cannot.
- ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers, content from partners and sites crawled by OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot. Blocking that crawler keeps your site out of ChatGPT search answers.
- The biggest levers you control are crawler access, clear business details, strong service pages, genuine reviews and mentions on other trusted sites.
- OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed and paid ads do not influence answers, so treat ChatGPT visibility as an outcome of good marketing, not a switch you flip.
How ChatGPT search finds and cites sources
ChatGPT can answer from what its model already learned, but for many questions, especially anything current, local or commercial, it searches the web first. According to OpenAI’s help documentation, ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers as well as content provided directly by partners. When it searches, it typically rewrites the person’s question into one or more targeted queries, reads the results and writes an answer with links to its sources.
OpenAI also runs its own search crawler. In its documentation on OpenAI crawlers, OpenAI explains three user agents that site owners should know:
- OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot is used to crawl content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. Blocking it signals that your content should not be used for training. It is a separate decision from search visibility.
- ChatGPT-User handles certain actions a person initiates in ChatGPT, such as visiting a page they asked about. OpenAI says it is not used to decide whether content appears in search.
The practical takeaway is that ChatGPT visibility depends on two things: whether your pages can be found in the indexes ChatGPT uses, and whether the content it retrieves gives it a clear, confident reason to mention you.
Step 1: Make sure OpenAI can reach your website
This is the most common technical problem we see, and the easiest to fix. Many sites block AI crawlers without realizing it, through a blanket robots.txt rule, a security plugin or a CDN bot setting.
- Check robots.txt. Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for rules that disallow OAI-SearchBot or that block all bots. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot should be allowed.
- Decide on GPTBot separately. Some businesses allow search crawling but block training. That is a legitimate choice and does not affect OAI-SearchBot.
- Check your firewall and CDN. OpenAI recommends allowing requests from its published IP ranges. Bot protection on services like Cloudflare can quietly block crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.
- Make key content readable as HTML. Services, locations, hours and prices should not live only inside images, PDFs or scripts that fail to load.
- Stay indexable in other search engines. Because ChatGPT also relies on third-party search providers, normal indexing health still matters. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
OpenAI notes that changes to robots.txt can take around a day to be picked up. If you are not sure what your site is blocking, a technical SEO audit will show crawler access, indexing and rendering problems in one pass.
Step 2: Make your business easy for AI to understand
When ChatGPT writes about a business, it pieces together facts from the pages it retrieves. If those facts are vague, inconsistent or missing, the safest thing for the AI to do is leave you out or describe you generically. Help it by making the basics unmistakable.
- Name, address and phone (NAP). Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and industry directories. Small differences, such as an old suite number, create doubt.
- A clear About page. Say who owns the business, when it started, where you operate, who you serve and what makes you different. Plain facts beat slogans.
- One strong page per core service. Explain what the service is, who it is for, how it works, typical timelines, what affects price and the questions customers ask. These pages are what ChatGPT can quote and link to.
- Location and service area details. If you serve specific Los Angeles neighborhoods or cities, say so in text, not only on a map image.
- Credentials and proof. Licenses, certifications, team bios, case studies and project examples give an AI concrete details to repeat.
Structured data such as Organization or LocalBusiness markup can reinforce these details for search engines, but it works best when it matches what is visibly on the page. It supports clarity rather than replacing it.

Step 3: Build the reputation ChatGPT can find
When someone asks ChatGPT for “the best family law attorneys in Pasadena” or “a reliable roofer in the Valley,” it is looking for evidence. Your own website is one source, but independent sources carry extra weight because they show what other people think.
- Reviews. Consistently earn genuine reviews on the platforms your customers use, and respond to them. Review content often describes your services in customers’ own words, which is exactly how people phrase their questions. Never buy or fake reviews.
- Local and industry press. A mention in a local news site, trade publication or association directory gives AI tools a credible third-party description of your business. Our media relations services focus on earning exactly this kind of coverage.
- Lists and comparisons. Many AI answers draw on “best of” and comparison articles. Being included on reputable, editorially independent lists helps, while paying for placement on low-quality lists usually does not.
- Community discussions. Helpful, transparent participation in forums and community groups where your customers ask questions can lead to organic mentions. Astroturfing tends to backfire.
Reputation work and AI visibility are now closely linked. If your reviews are thin or outdated, our reputation management team in Los Angeles can help you build a steady, compliant review process.

For local questions, ChatGPT often names specific businesses and may include details such as addresses or a map. OpenAI does not publish a full list of where each local detail comes from, so the safest approach is to keep every major listing accurate and complete.
- Google Business Profile: correct categories, services, hours, photos and regular updates. Our Google Business Profile optimization service covers the details that matter.
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect: often overlooked, but they feed other search and map experiences.
- Industry directories: Avvo for attorneys, Healthgrades for doctors, Houzz for contractors and similar sites relevant to your field.
If you sell products online, OpenAI has also published guidance for merchants who want their products to appear in ChatGPT shopping results, which starts with allowing OAI-SearchBot. Keep product pages crawlable, with accurate prices, availability and descriptions.
What you can’t control in ChatGPT
It is worth being clear about the limits, because some vendors blur them.
- You cannot submit your site for inclusion. Discovery happens through crawling and search providers, not a sign-up form.
- Placement is not guaranteed. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and does not guarantee placement. Anyone promising a specific ChatGPT mention is overpromising.
- Answers vary. The same question can produce different businesses on different days, for different users and in different locations.
- Ads are separate. ChatGPT now shows ads in some markets, but OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers and are clearly labeled. Paying for ads will not change what the organic answer says about you.
- Training data is not instantly updated. If ChatGPT answers from its model rather than a live search, older information about your business may appear. Strong, consistent current information on the web is the best long-term fix.
What you can do is improve the inputs: access, clarity, content and reputation. That is the core of our AI SEO services, and it also strengthens your Google rankings at the same time.
How to measure ChatGPT visibility and traffic
- Referral traffic. OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links from ChatGPT search, so visits show up in Google Analytics under that source. Track which landing pages receive them and whether those visitors call or fill out forms.
- Prompt tracking. Each month, ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, including location-specific versions, and record whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which pages are cited.
- Server logs. Your hosting logs show whether OAI-SearchBot is visiting and which pages it requests.
- Lead source questions. Add “ChatGPT or another AI tool” as an option when you ask new customers how they found you. Many AI-influenced customers call directly instead of clicking.

Frequently asked questions
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
For many questions, ChatGPT runs web searches through third-party providers and its own crawler, reads the results and writes an answer with sources. OpenAI says it ranks results using multiple factors, so businesses with clear websites, consistent details, strong reviews and credible mentions are better positioned.
Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?
That is a business decision. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use your content for model training. It does not block OAI-SearchBot, which is the crawler used for ChatGPT search, so you can block training while still allowing search visibility.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. ChatGPT has ads in some markets, but OpenAI says ads are labeled and run separately from answers and do not influence what ChatGPT says. Organic visibility depends on your site, your information and your reputation.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Crawler changes can be picked up within about a day, but being recommended depends on content and reputation signals that build over months. There is no fixed timeline and no guaranteed outcome.
Does Google SEO help with ChatGPT visibility?
Yes. Crawlable pages, clear service content, consistent business listings and earned mentions help in Google and in ChatGPT, because both rely on finding and trusting information across the web.
